BJP IN THE HOUSE FOR ABFF MUSIC PANEL August 26, 2008 By William Hanford Lee, Jr. I was very fortunate to attend an informative symposium entitled The Art & Business of Music For Film that was held recently at the Sofitel Hotel in West Hollywood. The symposium was part of the recent American Black Film Festival (ABFF) held here in Los Angeles.
FoxxKing Entertainment presented the panel discussion that was designed to educate filmmakers on the process of licensing music for their motion pictures, television programs, commercials etc. The panel consisted of Shelby Stone – FoxxKing Entertainment, Benny Boom – director of “Next Day Air”; Paul Stewart – music supervisor “Hustle & Flow”; and producer Teddy Riley of Guy and Blackstreet fame and one of the pioneers of the music and film licensing business.
The panel was moderated by LaRhonda Sutton V.P. of music for FoxxKing Entertainment. I was a guest of my longtime friend Shaun Lee who works for entertainment icon Quincy Jones, and was there with her client and friend – music producer Chase. It was my first time meeting Chase (who is also a super talented writer and producer). It was a trip seeing Teddy Riley chillin’ in Los Angeles – I guess he recently relocated out here. I also got to meet the production team Ian and J of The Elements. They were the composers on “Next Day Air.” The music biz has really heated up in the last couple of months.
